These inspiring words, which were first written by Thomas Jefferson, have served as the bedrock of our national identity for 238 years. Every year on July 4, Americans come together to commemorate this proclamation of individual liberty and to honor those who defend it. With fireworks, parades, and picnics, we celebrate our nation’s independence as we delight in the freedoms that are uniquely American.

Yet, in the midst of this fanfare there remains a tragic reality…millions are being denied the individual freedoms that we tend to take for granted. Before they can take their first breath, they are refused the rights that are guaranteed by our nation’s founding documents — the right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

They are the silent victims of the abortion holocaust that takes the lives of an estimated 1.2 million unborn children every year in America. These individuals whom Jefferson described as “created equal” and “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights” have become victims of one of the greatest human rights violations in American history. And since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade, an estimated 55 million unborn children — our fellow citizens — have been lost to the tragedy of abortion.

While we sing patriotic songs to celebrate our freedom, millions are denied the most fundamental inalienable right — the Right to Life. There is a good reason why our founding fathers listed LIFE as the first right: because without it, there is no Liberty or pursuit of Happiness.

In short, to protect the Right to Life is to realize the highest American ideal.
