The biblical arguments for life can be summed up in one statement: What is common about all of us is what makes all of us uncommon.

What is common about all of us is what makes all of us uncommon. #prolife Click To Tweet

From the beginning of creation, God determined to make human beings in His likeness. “God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness….’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:26-27 NKJV).

To bear God’s image—the imago Dei—is to bear the marks of distinction, dignity, and divine purpose. How do each of these characteristics play out in our understanding of human beings?

  • Distinction: Humans are distinct from the rest of God’s creation, being the only creatures endowed with God’s image and breath (Genesis 2:7). Fashioned in God’s image, every person—born or preborn, sick or healthy, rich or poor, famous or infamous, young or old—is a unique individual invested with inherent dignity and ultimate value. We’re the only earthly created beings that have the opportunity to have a personal, intimate relationship with our Creator.
  • Dignity: In a manner similar to God, human beings possess the ability to think, reason, feel, and will. Created with a physical and spiritual nature, we can relate to God and represent Him on earth. We also anticipate that an eternal destiny awaits us once we’ve fulfilled our divine purpose in this life, as we are created to be eternal beings.
  • Divine Purpose: God’s intent in investing His image into humanity is that every individual might be born and then bring to fruition his or her God-ordained end. It is in God that “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28 NKJV). “No one has power in the day of death” (Ecclesiastes 8:8 NKJV). Rather, God determines the day of death, when each person has fulfilled his or her divine purposes in life (Acts 13:36).

The imago Dei is the common element of all human beings—born and preborn. Nevertheless, this commonality is what makes each of us uncommon. We are unique individuals created by the hand of God. King David understood this. As one might weave together a tapestry, David said God “formed [his] inward parts…in [his] mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13). In prenatal development, God creates an awe-inspiring and wonderful work of divine and living art—another human being who bears God’s image.

David’s “frame,” or his skeletal structure, was “skillfully” fastened together in the “secret” and unseen world of the womb (139:15 NKJV). Before the advent of modern technology, we couldn’t see how every baby was “woven together in the dark of the womb”—away from the eyes of human perception and understanding (139:15 NLT). But God’s “eyes have seen [the] unformed substance” of every preborn child (139:16 NASB). And before the day of one’s birth, God has written in His book the predetermined length and activities of a person’s life (139:1–4).

The creation of another human being—another image bearer—at the moment of conception is a profound mystery. And because the omnipotent and sovereign hand of God is intimately involved in this mystery, every human being is invested with distinction, dignity, and divine purpose—and is precious in the sight of God.

Scripture Is Supported by Science

Recently scientists marveled at the discovery of a bright flash of light that occurs at the moment of conception:

Human life begins in bright flash of light as a sperm meets an egg, scientists have shown for the first time, after capturing the astonishing ‘fireworks’ on film. An explosion of tiny sparks erupts from the egg at the exact moment of conception. Scientists had seen the phenomenon occur in…animals but it is the first time it has been also shown to happen in humans. (emphasis mine)

This burst of fluorescence is just one of the many examples by which science confirms what the Bible makes clear: Life begins at the moment of conception, complete with its own distinction, dignity, and divine purpose.

As I often say when I’m speaking to Christian audiences across the country, science is merely catching up to the unequivocal truth that Scripture teaches. However, while we promote the truth about the value of human life through science, ethics, social justice, and Scripture, we must do more than teach. We must be the hands and feet of the Gospel, supporting those around us who are hurting. We must rescue children and families from abortion by supporting women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. We have the opportunity to help them physically, emotionally, and spiritually, so they have every reason to choose LIFE for their child.
