Marlena’s Story

“There was no ifs and buts about it. I wanted to have an abortion…I don’t want to start all the way over.”

Marlena’s husband, Kevin, already made up his mind that he didn’t want to terminate the pregnancy. Eventually, she found herself searching for pre-screening appointments for getting an abortion. And that’s when Marlena found Human Coalition online. She spoke to the representative on the phone and made an appointment.

Marlena was encouraged by those at her appointment letting her know “everything will be okay” and “the baby might be a blessing.” She thought that maybe God was using these people to reach out to her.

But when Marlena received a free ultrasound, it changed everything. “I saw arms and legs moving, a head. I’m thinking I was going to see a little egg or something. It was a whole human! I was happy and shocked at the same time. My emotions were everywhere.”

At that moment she realized she couldn’t abort her baby.

Then, the unthinkable happened. Marlena received a heart-wrenching call that her husband had been shot and did not survive his injuries.

“I’m eight months pregnant. On our fourth child, [we’re about] to have a baby. [He’s] not going to know his father and his father is not going to know him… this cannot be true God let it not be true. And I couldn’t imagine my life without him. So I stopped eating, drinking. I knew that I still needed to give the baby some nutrition. But I had no energy to do nothing. No self care. No anything.”

Then Marlena started to look at it in a different way. The encouraging words from the staff at the Human Coalition clinic weeks earlier echoed in her mind: Maybe this baby will be a blessing to me after all.

“God knew that I was pregnant before I knew. God knows things that happen before they happen. I believe…God knew that [my husband] was going to lose his life. That’s why he blessed me with [a baby].”

Today, Marlena says she’s so happy she gave birth to her baby.
