Annette’s Story

When “Annette” called Human Coalition, she had already made up her mind. She was far along in her pregnancy and preparing to leave Georgia to obtain an abortion in a more abortion friendly state. The situation felt urgent and heavy. The father of her baby was abusive and she felt obtaining an abortion was the only way to protect her and her other children from his violence.

For Annette, the thought of continuing the pregnancy meant remaining vulnerable, exposed, and in danger.

She was juggling the responsibilities of caring for her children while navigating the heartbreak and trauma of abuse. Though she had never had an abortion before, fear was now driving her toward one. When she reached out to Human Coalition, Annette was looking for answers about abortion procedures. What she didn’t expect was someone to stop and truly see her – not just her circumstances, but her heart.

Annette was immediately connected with one of Human Coalition’s nurses for a telecare consultation. In that safe and compassionate space, her story began to unfold. As they spoke, it became clear that Annette didn’t want to terminate her pregnancy because she didn’t want her baby. In fact, the opposite was true: She loved being a mother. Her desire was to parent this child as well, but fear had gripped her. What she truly needed wasn’t a procedure. She needed a plan, support, and safety.

With warmth and grace, the nurse walked her through all of her options, including parenting and adoption. . But more than information, she offered something more powerful; the nurse offered hope. She reassured Annette that her life didn’t have to be defined by fear. She could choose life, and she didn’t have to do it alone.

The nurse offered to connect her with a  social worker who could help build a customized care plan around her specific needs. That offer changed everything.

Annette accepted the support. In the days following that call, she made a bold decision: she would parent her baby. Since then, she has been working closely with her social worker to find stability. They’ve addressed key areas of her life: counseling and therapy to help heal from the trauma of abuse, life skills training to empower her as a parent and provider, assistance with basic needs like material resources for her children and help with utilities to ensure her family stays warm and safe.

Annette’s journey is ongoing, but she is no longer walking it alone. Her care plan is evolving with her needs, and she continues to receive consistent support as she rebuilds a future for herself and her children. Now, for the first time, her family’s future is rooted in dignity, safety, and love.

Annette’s story is a powerful reminder: when we rescue children through caring for moms, lives are not only saved—they are transformed. Annette went from crisis and fear to courage and a plan. She chose to fight to protect her child, allowing him or her to grow safely in her womb.
