Khloe’s Story

“March 15th was one of the worst days of my life, or so I thought at the time.”

A single mom of one, “Khloe” had just discovered that she was pregnant. Seven years since her last pregnancy, Khloe couldn’t think of a worse time to find out this news.

Longing for a change, Khloe had just moved to Texas from New York. She was also battling depression, and it was the worst it’d been in a long time. To numb herself from the emptiness she felt, she turned to alcohol. Drowning out her sorrows sip by sip, Khloe told herself there wasn’t much left in this life for her. Believing the lies her mind was telling her, Khloe began to fall deeper into despair.

Unable to will herself to do even the simplest tasks in her daily life, Khloe hit rock bottom.

She wanted to give up.

She drank even more, though her body kept crashing and falling ill under the effects of alcohol. Khloe was oblivious to the damage she was causing, not only to herself, but also to her family. In the moment, she didn’t care. She kept drinking until she passed out.

In the morning, Khloe woke up.

I’m still alive and breathing. There must be more for my life.

Getting on her knees, Khloe began to pray.

“God, it doesn’t matter what happens next. I don’t even care if I end up in a hospital. But please help me with my depression and desire for alcohol. I don’t want to turn to other things to keep fixing this void in my heart.”

“God, it doesn’t matter what happens next. I don’t even care if I end up in a hospital. But please help me with my depression and desire for alcohol. I don’t want to turn to other things to keep fixing this void in my heart.”

Khloe knew she couldn’t keep living the way she was; she needed help.

Three weeks later, on March 15th, she found out she was pregnant. Khloe recalls that she didn’t see her pregnancy as a blessing at the time. She had a thousand reasons why she shouldn’t have another baby. She was trying to build a better life and clean herself up. Feeling she was in no position to parent another child, Khloe searched for abortion options online. She saw no other way out.

Khloe called a few clinics with no answer.

Please, someone answer.

The person Khloe spoke with next forever changed her life — so much so that Khloe now refers to her as her “angel.”

Upon that first “Hello,” Khloe was in tears. Throughout her conversation with Nicole, one of our nurses at Human Coalition, Khloe laid all her emotions, worries, and thoughts on the table. The drugs, the alcohol, the move, and now this unexpected pregnancy.

“She gave me the clarity I needed.”

Khloe’s “angel” was able to cut through all the noise and get to the heart of the matter. What was Khloe’s true desire? Did she want to have her baby and experience the joy of being a mom of two? Or did she want to keep believing the lies that she couldn’t quit alcohol and that she would always be alone?

With Nicole’s encouragement, honesty, and truth spoken in love, Khloe came to make two powerful decisions with her angel by her side. First, she made the decision to stop all drug and alcohol use. Second, Khloe made the decision to keep her baby. She chose life.

Though Khloe still felt uncertain about what lay ahead, she found comfort in knowing that Nicole would be checking in on her every day for accountability and support. For once in her life, Khloe felt like someone genuinely cared for her.

All Khloe needed was a voice telling her “You can do this.” She could stop drinking and be the mom she deeply wanted to be for this new little life.

Khloe developed strength and grit in the months to follow as she carried her son. She made choice after choice to say no to drinking and drugs. The Lord was her strength, and her accountability with her nurse forever changed the course of her life.

Khloe soon connected with other moms facing unexcepted pregnancies who were walking through similar things.

“We all became inseparable.”

Human Coalition also served Khloe through the Continuum of Care program. Through a network of resources and support services, Khloe was equipped with Holiday Connections, financial assistance, and information on utility assistance and the WIC nutrition program. She also received contacts for pro-life doctors in her area. Khloe developed a good rhythm with working and attending school.

After several months of sobriety, Khloe felt ready and confident when it came time for her son’s arrival. He was born healthy and beautiful; Khloe was in awe! She’s not sure where she would be had she made the decision to abort.

“If I would have never spoken to Nurse Nicole I would have never had my baby. I would have kept trying to find ways to abort and most likely would have hurt myself in so many ways. I was determined not to have a baby so I was willing to try anything, but Thank God I reached the right people.”

But Khloe’s story doesn’t stop there. A year later, Khloe discovered she was pregnant with her third child. Having previously found resources and support at Human Coalition, she knew we were just a phone call away. A life decision for her third child was made easy, and abortion remained unthinkable and unnecessary for Khloe.
