Planned Parenthood: The Power, the Profit, and the Problem

NOTE: The following blog is drawn from Human Coalition’s newly updated e-book, The Complete Guide to Defunding Planned Parenthood. The e-book was originally authored by Rev. Dean Nelson (†2023), a champion for life who fought tirelessly to see the Planned Parenthood Abortion Goliath closed.

Understanding Planned Parenthood

If we want to end abortion in America, we first need to understand who we’re up against. Planned Parenthood isn’t just another organization that happens to provide abortions – it’s long been the driving force behind the abortion industry. To defeat an opponent, we have to know who they are, what motivates them, and how they operate.

The Power Player of the Abortion Industry

Planned Parenthood is the heavyweight of abortion in America. While many abortion businesses share responsibility for ending the lives of millions of children, Planned Parenthood’s size, influence, and reach make it the central player, or the “kingpin”, of the abortion industry.

It is essential to understand that Planned Parenthood is the “glue” that holds the entire abortion industry together. Without Planned Parenthood, the rest of the abortion industry would crumble.

In fact, abortions are available in every state – whether surgically or using the abortion pill, with the number of abortions rising to more than one million nationwide from July, 2023, to June, 2024.

In the last year alone, Planned Parenthood performed more than 402,230 abortions, roughly four out of every ten abortions in the United States (other providers can be found here). They have a powerful political arm, Planned Parenthood Action, which spends tens of millions of dollars to keep pro-abortion politicians in office, from local school board members to U.S. presidents.

Planned Parenthood also receives over half a billion dollars in taxpayer money each year and drives cultural messages that make abortion seem acceptable or even compassionate. They’ve mastered the art of influencing young minds through schools, media, and politics, ensuring that abortion remains legal and profitable.

Here are some of the ways Planned Parenthood props up the abortion industry:

• Planned Parenthood drives the cultural messaging that deceives many of Americans into believing that killing a child in the womb is a moral choice.

• Planned Parenthood has innovated and driven changing abortion trends, such as the abortion pill, to keep profits high.

• Planned Parenthood has infiltrated school systems to sway America’s younger generation toward its deadly agenda.

No other abortion business has the funding or capacity to prop up abortion as an institution the way Planned Parenthood can.

Selling Death, Not Healthcare

Planned Parenthood’s bogus motto may be “Care. No Matter What,” but its affiliates and former employees have stated that the business model is to sell abortions.

Despite the claim by the CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains that the organization doesn’t have quotas, numerous insiders say otherwise.

A clinic in Aurora, Colorado, received a certificate from Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains for “Exceeding Abortion Visits.”

Former Iowa Planned Parenthood manager Sue Thayer shared, “I trained my staff the way that I was trained, which was to really encourage women to choose abortion and to have it at Planned Parenthood because it counts toward our goal.”

Thayer said centers that hit abortion quotas receive incentives like pizza parties, paid time off, and special travel.

In Indiana, former Planned Parenthood nurse Marianne Anderson said,

“I felt like i was more of a salesman sometimes, to sell abortions. And we were told on a regular basis, ‘you have a quota to meet to keep this clinic open.”

An entity selling a procedure that, when successful, results in the death of a human life virtually 100% of the time cannot with good conscience market itself as a “healthcare provider.” Facilities that celebrate death as a success metric abandon the core values of medical care and the oath to “do no harm.”

An entity selling a procedure that, when successful, results in the death of a human life virtually 100% of the time cannot with good conscience market itself as a “healthcare provider.”

Planned Parenthood has clearly nailed its sales pitch, selling hundreds of thousands of abortions a year.

Planned Parenthood doesn’t help women solve their real problems like housing, job training, or relationships. Instead, it takes her money, ends her child’s life, and sends her home with the same struggles that brought her there. It perpetuates abortion by refusing to extend the solutions she actually needs.

The Real Solution: Invest in Rescuing Children & Caring for Moms

Those who truly want to care for women (unlike Planned Parenthood) look for ways to eliminate the crises driving them toward abortion. Killing the baby does not solve her root struggles.

To combat Planned Parenthood, we must reach women first, before they do, and offer compassion, resources, and real help. Together, we can rescue the next child, serve the next mom, and build a future where abortion has no place, and where life always does.

So how does the pro-life movement take out a giant like Planned Parenthood, and finally bring about the real end of abortion in America?
