VICTORY: Texas Passes the Woman and Child Protection Act

AUTHOR: Jeff Bradford

VICTORY! The Texas Legislature has passed Senate Bill 7, the Woman and Child Protection Act (WCPA)—a groundbreaking law that strengthens protections for moms and their children by deterring the flood of dangerous abortion pills into Texas.

For years, abortion pill vendors have exploited loopholes by shipping abortion pills through the mail across state and national borders. Thousands of these pills enter Texas each year, often without medical oversight. These chemical abortions end the lives of Texas children. They also put mothers at serious risk of complications, sometimes requiring emergency care, according to the Ethics and Public Policy Center

The Woman and Child Protection Act closes the dangerous gaps that have made the state vulnerable to the abortion pill industry. It empowers private citizens to take legal action against individuals or organizations who traffic abortion pills into Texas, even if they are located in other states or overseas. By creating new enforcement tools, the law will protect moms from harm and safeguard thousands of babies’ lives.

Champions for Life in the Legislature

This historic victory would not have been possible without the tireless leadership of Senator Bryan Hughes and Representative Jeff Leach. Their courage, persistence, and compassion for both women and children carried this legislation from its earliest stages to final passage. Texas families will feel the ripple effects of their leadership for years to come.

Human Coalition’s Role

Human Coalition was honored to play an active role in this legislation—from its inception, to Human Coalition nurses giving voice to our clients’ stories in legislative testimonies, and standing alongside pro-life allies until the very end.

We are deeply grateful for the many pro-life partners and advocates who worked day and night to see this bill through to victory, especially Texas Right to Life, whose crucial leadership in the Texas Legislature has been key to many pro-life victories and children’s lives rescued from abortion.

Why It Matters

The passage of the Woman and Child Protection Act is a monumental step toward making abortion unthinkable and unnecessary in Texas. It means fewer babies’ lives lost to dangerous chemical abortions. It means more mothers spared from trauma and harm. And it means Texas continues to lead the way in protecting the most vulnerable among us.

We pray that many states will follow Texas’ example and continue to work diligently to close the loopholes that leave women and children vulnerable to the predatory abortion industry.

Today, we celebrate a huge victory—for moms, for babies, and for life.
