The Moment She Thought Was the End
With trembling hands, “Morgan” looked down at the positive pregnancy test. The faint pink lines on the stick confirmed what she had feared …
This was not part of the plan.
With two children already at home, it wasn’t in her plans to have a third. Another mouth to feed, another child to raise, another person she was responsible for. Furthermore, she was without health insurance. With financial challenges closing in on her, what other choice did she have but to abort her child? Providing for another life was out of the question. It felt like there couldn’t have been worse timing. She felt the weight of what she was lacking, and it led her to seek something she never thought she would: abortion.
Browsing the internet for options, she found Human Coalition’s national contact center and called the listed number.
A compassionate nurse listened to Morgan’s fears and concerns and presented her with the numerous possibilities and resources available at her fingertips. The nurse explained that there were ways around her obstacles and there were many other people willing to help.
With all her options laid out before her, Morgan began to see that life for her child was possible and that her present hurdles didn’t have to become long-term obstacles.
Morgan realized that if she made the decision to abort her baby, she would live the rest of her life with regret. She wouldn’t be able to create a life’s worth of memories with this child. She couldn’t do that to herself, her child, or her family. Living with that regret would be unbearable. This regret she would have for the rest of her life is what drove her to choose life for her child!
She remained in close contact with her nurse. Throughout Morgan’s pregnancy, she received consistent encouragement, support, and compassion. She was also connected with a social worker through the Continuum of Care program, who helped her obtain essential items for her baby and other resources to prepare for motherhood. Morgan was even able to obtain health insurance.
The mountain of obstacles in front of her were crumbling, one by one, and she gained a new sense of confidence in herself. She also developed a deep love for her baby. With her nurse and social worker in her corner, she knew she could accomplish anything she set her mind to. This support system and intervention in her life saved her baby’s life.
We received this text from Morgan:
“You were a blessing to me in my life when I needed it the most. When I was thinking of abortion, I don’t know how I got here. Y’all were so nice to me. I remember the nurse calling me every week, asking how I was doing and how I was feeling. Y’all helped me a lot through that moment where I thought it was the end.”
Morgan said it herself; she thought it was the end. Her finances were sparce and her support was nonexistent. It wasn’t until someone opened her eyes to the possibilities and opportunities when the shift happened: she looked inside herself and confidently said, “I choose life.”
Thank you for providing Morgan with the necessary resources she needed in order to joyfully choose life. You made a way for her to overcome the obstacles and challenges preventing her from being able to choose life. And that is what led to her baby being rescued from abortion!
