Pregnant again, “Janessa” was in disbelief.
All she could think about was how difficult her pregnancy would be. Already a mother of three with her youngest just eight months old, having a fourth child was throwing Janessa into a state of overwhelm and panic. Her husband would be just as shocked as she was.
Janessa did not want this baby. She was content with her three children, and her body was still recovering from the previous birth. Upset with herself for getting pregnant again, her mind immediately told her to abort. Keeping her baby was not an option. Affording life for three children was more than she could bear at times.
She was at her limit.
Janessa had little support, and no one was encouraging her to keep her baby. Janessa searched online for solutions. Coming across Human Coalition’s number, she called, resolute in her thinking that abortion was right. It wasn’t until she began talking to the nurse that Janessa learned of the support available to her. She wouldn’t have to walk through her pregnancy alone. Janessa began to feel at ease and able to fully consider what all her options were.
Janessa learned about Human Coalition’s Continuum of Care program and the assistance that they offer. She hung up the phone that day feeling hopeful. For the first time, she felt like everything would be okay.
She could choose life for her baby and embrace being a mom of four. She could place her baby with a loving adoptive family of her choice. With both options, she knew choosing life was possible and going through another pregnancy wouldn’t seem so daunting again.
Over the next couple of weeks, Janessa recounted in her mind everything that the nurse had said. She began to envision life as a family of six, and as she did, her fear dissipated. She loved her children and began to open her heart to loving another little baby as well.
Shortly after making her life decision, Janessa joined the Continuum of Care program. Throughout her pregnancy, Janessa received consistent support and communication. She was amazed at how caring and genuine the team was. She received $1,000 worth of maternal support for herself and her baby. This included pregnancy support, money for groceries, and baby items. She even was assigned a nurse that remained on call so that she could have support whenever she needed it. Janessa was determined to breastfeed, so she received lactation education as well.
When asked what her favorite part of the Continuum of Care program was, Janessa said,
“Having someone check in on me all the time, and also guiding me and providing information regarding my pregnancy. So much support!”
Had Human Coalition not been there the day Janessa needed us most, she most likely would have made a decision she would regret for a lifetime.
If Janessa could pass on a piece of encouragement to moms walking through unexpected pregnancies, she would say,
“You can do this. There’s a lot of support out there for you.”
