In her 40’s, this pregnancy was unexpected for “Camila.”
She felt so many factors were against her.
With two miscarriages in her past, Camila believed her body wasn’t made to carry out a pregnancy. She thought she was too old and began to believe the lie that maybe her body just couldn’t sustain a human life.
The father of the child was no longer in the picture, and the last thing Camila desired was to be a single mom.
To Camila it was clear. She thought she had only one option: abortion.
Abortion seemed like the answer to her problems. With no support in raising her baby, it erased the need for help and removed the lie that her body couldn’t handle pregnancy. There would be no cause for doubt, no room for fear.
Searching for an abortion online, Camila stumbled upon Human Coalition and gave us a call. From the first hello, Camila sensed how attentive and kind the nurse on the line was. She made it a point to be honest about how she felt incapable of carrying out a pregnancy this time around. All she had ever felt was failure when it came to being pregnant. Was she too old? Could she really parent alone?
The nurse assured Camila she would not be alone and that Human Coalition would be with her every step of the way. She shared that there were resources and people available who wanted to help Camila and her child. She didn’t have to make a decision right then, but before the call ended, the nurse set up a free ultrasound appointment for Camila at a nearby pregnancy center.
Hanging up the phone, Camila let the words of truth wash over her. Truths like the fact that she could parent well and that abortion was not her only option. She needed time to process and allow the lies to slowly unwind from her mind.
A couple of days later, Camila sat in a room surrounded by sweet newborn photos and stuffed animals tucked in the corner. She began to daydream about what a nursery might look like.
The moment had come to see her baby on the ultrasound screen. The sonographer escorted her back and rubbed some cool gel on her stomach.
No one could prepare her for this moment. She hadn’t made it this far with her previous two pregnancies.
Then she saw the little human life.
Her baby was on the screen, moving, kicking, and full of action.
This living being wasn’t just a clump of cells. It wasn’t just a fetus. Her child had a body of his or her own, unique DNA, and their very own heartbeat.

Camila pondered all of this quietly. Maybe her body would comply and she would be able to carry this life to full term. Maybe she could raise a child on her own. She began to feel more hopeful throughout the day.
A week later during her follow-up appointment with her nurse, Camila shared that she was keeping her baby. After seeing the baby in real time at her ultrasound appointment, she was won over.
We assured Camila that she wouldn’t be alone in her pregnancy journey. Camila felt the lies fall off one by one as her nurse proved through her actions that what she had said about walking alongside Camila had been true.
Camila was provided with material assistance for her baby such as diapers, wipes, and a homemade knit sweater and hat. She received support throughout her pregnancy with consistent follow-up after her doctors’ appointments to see how she was doing.
The day came for her precious baby to be born, and Camila was delighted to discover it was a girl!
She was so thankful she had made the decision for life and was so glad she found Human Coalition the moment she did.
Camila hopes her story for life will inspire other women facing similar situations to choose life for their baby. Camila is doing well postpartum and can’t imagine her life without her little girl in it. Camila hopes to volunteer her time at Human Coalition one day, and we think that’s an absolutely beautiful idea.
