“Zuri” moved to Texas from another part of the country. This was a desperate effort due to relationship problems with her boyfriend, her mother, and her sister. The situation got even more complicated because she was pregnant.
Her pregnancy was unexpected, and her relationship with the father was anything but reliable. She needed a new start, but going as far as Texas seemed a bit extreme.
After arriving in Texas, she discovered how difficult it was to get a job and keep the inadequate housing that she had to tolerate. The little money Zuri had was going fast, and she was on the brink of being evicted and living on the cold streets with her two other children, one of whom had severe physical disabilities.
Desperate, Zuri figured that getting an abortion would help solve her problems. She could start over and not worry about affording another child. The pressure was almost unbearable, so she started looking online for an abortion.

Deep down inside, she really wanted to keep the baby she was carrying, but she saw no way out of her situation. It seemed impossible. And that’s when she contacted Human Coalition.
Instead of talking about the prospect of aborting her baby, Zuri instead received care and compassionate counsel. That helped to calm her allowing her to realize there were other real options beyond abortion.
Soon, Zuri was met with compassion and kindness at a pregnancy center, where she received a free pregnancy test and an ultrasound. There, it was confirmed that she was pregnant with a baby girl.
When she saw her daughter move and heard the baby’s heartbeat, Zuri was amazed and even more convinced that keeping her baby was the best thing to do. But she had some unresolved questions that needed to be considered and answered first.
Slowly and thoughtfully, Zuri came to a decision. “After having space to talk, reflect, and feel supported without judgment, I began to feel more confident and hopeful. I realized I wasn’t alone, and that made all the difference.” Cheerfully, she chose life and kept her baby.
But the family trauma didn’t stop there. Zuri’s baby came early. This required a C-section for Zuri and time in the NICU for her daughter. Thankfully, her sweet baby girl finally got to go home.
To other moms considering an abortion, Zuri shares these words of wisdom: “I would tell them that their feelings are valid, and they deserve compassion and understanding. It’s okay to take time, ask questions, and seek support. You don’t have to have everything figured out right away.”
Zuri got the support she desperately needed, and to everyone involved, she said:
“You supported me with kindness, patience, and genuine care. You listened to my fears, offered encouragement, and provided practical help when I needed it most. I always felt respected and never pressured — only supported.”
Zuri was about to be evicted and needed financial help to move into a new place. Upon discovering how dire her situation was, Zuri’s team immediately sent out a CarePortal request to area churches inviting them to step up and help meet her urgent needs.
Within a few days, a church responded, committing to fulfill the request. Surprisingly, Zuri was able to meet the donor, who also invited her to their church. Soon after, she attended the church and has since joined.
Had Zuri not connected with Human Coalition, she and her children would most likely be homeless, and she would not have the employment and tangible assistance she received.
Today, Zuri is thriving. She has secure housing and has obtained full-time employment — providing stability for herself and her family. Her relationships with her mother and sister have strengthened significantly, creating a more supportive and connected family environment.
She has also invested time in developing her creative talents and is now preparing to launch her own business, demonstrating both confidence and forward momentum in her personal and professional growth.
To everyone involved — Zuri happily declares, “Thank you for creating a safe and loving space. Your kindness truly changed my life, and I will always be grateful for the way you showed up for me during such an important time.”
