Emmie was scared to tell her family she was pregnant. So when her boyfriend suggested an abortion was the right thing to do, she reluctantly agreed. Frozen with fear, Emmie didn’t know what to do. So her boyfriend offered to call and get her an appointment. When he reached Human Coalition’s national Contact Center, he explained that Emmie had taken a home pregnancy test, which was positive. The call agent immediately scheduled an appointment for Emmie at the women’s care clinic.

She did not believe in abortion

When Emmie came into our women’s care clinic to receive her free ultrasound, she shared with her counselor that while she was overwhelmed with the idea of being pregnant and telling her family about the pregnancy, she did not believe in abortion. She explained that in her heart she knew she didn’t want an abortion, but she felt it was the right thing for her to do at this time.

Her baby had a strong heartbeat

During her visit Emmie received a free ultrasound and saw her baby for the first time, complete with moving limbs and a strong heartbeat. She left the clinic that day feeling conflicted and torn between wanting to keep her child and facing the pressures and fears of her circumstances.

Our staff encouraged Emmie

However, as our staff continued to follow up with Emmie, meeting with her multiple times to offer encouragement and support, she began to envision keeping her baby. With each appointment, she was able to see her baby growing, moving, and waving its tiny arms and legs. Emmie also began talking to her boyfriend about keeping the baby. And as the shock of the pregnancy wore off, he apologized for pressuring her to abort. He even helped her find the courage to tell her parents, and Emmie’s family responded better than she expected. Months later, she came back to the clinic and introduced our staff to her precious baby, “Leia.”
