“Lanie” was overwhelmed when the home pregnancy test was positive. She had a young child, and the idea of supporting another one was overwhelming. Her boyfriend believed an abortion was the most reasonable choice, given their financial difficulties. And even though the idea of aborting her baby made her sad, Lanie reluctantly began searching for abortion information.
Thankfully, she decided to reach out to Human Coalition’s national Contact Center. The call agent compassionately listened to Lanie’s story and helped her schedule an appointment for the next available time at our women’s care clinic.
They could not afford a second child
Once she was at our clinic, Lanie shared her situation with the counselor – how she and her boyfriend couldn’t afford to raise another child right now. One was as much as they could handle. There simply weren’t enough resources to adequately provide for two.
However, Lanie’s counselor encouraged her and talked with her about what it would take, practically speaking, to help the couple feel confident in caring for two children. The counselor explained there was help available and the couple wouldn’t have to do it alone. As she talked through the issues with Lanie, they were able to match a solution to each problem.
Her baby was already fully formed
Lanie also received a free ultrasound that day, which revealed she was almost halfway through her pregnancy. Her little boy was fully formed, growing, moving, and stretching his tiny fingers and toes. Surprised and shocked, Lanie and her boyfriend left the clinic rethinking their decision to abort.
When our staff followed up with Lanie, she told them they’d decided to choose life for their baby. The staff continued working with and encouraging Lanie, and months later, she had the joy of welcoming a baby boy, “Avery.”
