A Story Worth Telling

The very first Human Coalition baby was rescued from abortion on June 22, 2010. A young woman and her fiancé went online in search of abortion information, and HC was able to reach them before they went to the abortion clinic. We directed them to a pregnancy center in Pittsburgh, the Pregnancy Resource Center of the South Hills (PRCSH).

The PRCSH staff welcomed the young woman and her fiancé with open arms and invited them to have an ultrasound. When the mother saw her baby on the screen, she said, “That’s my baby. I can’t kill my baby.” The staff then brought the father of the baby into the room, and he too saw his daughter on the screen. He held his fiancée’s, hand, cried, and nodded in agreement with her decision to keep the baby.

Today, a 4½-year-old-girl is going to preschool, playing in her backyard, and enjoying the wonders of life, in part because of the cooperative work of Human Coalition and PRCSH.

This year the first 35 kids we helped save started pre-k!The story of Baby #1 is forever etched in my mind because that day was a personal turning point for me. I’d started Human Coalition somewhat reluctantly several months earlier. I was always pro-life, but I’d just moved my family from Ft. Lauderdale to Dallas, started a new job as COO of a large marketing agency, and was getting settled into our new life in Texas. Though I sensed God was prodding me to start a new nonprofit organization, I politely told Him to check in with one or two of the thousands of other pro-life organizations in America.

But in His grace and mercy, God pressed me to start Human Coalition despite myself.

The process of setting up Human Coalition was slow, and I complained almost the entire time. I went to LegalZoom.com to fill out the various forms, paid the fees, and completed the setup myself because I was too cheap to hire an attorney. The IRS took nine months to approve my paperwork, and more than a few times I told my wife Jessica that I wanted to quit. I really had no interest in holding down my full-time for-profit job and trying to start and operate a nonprofit on the side.

The IRS finally gave me the green light on December 31, 2009. I scraped together some savings, asked the co-founder of Human Coalition, Tim Kachuriak, to help me (he was far more excited about the whole thing than I was), hit up a few friends for some money, and started working to help save babies in three cities in May 2010.

Then came June 22, 2010. That night, the director of PRCSH called to tell me they’d rescued the very first Human Coalition baby. It’s hard for me to articulate how I felt, but in that moment I was broken. God had condescended to not only save me for all eternity, but also use me to help save one of His image bearers from death in the womb.

It really was a conversion experience of sorts. I went from being a reluctant, if not petulant, pro-life participant, to a passionate (my staff would say “obsessed”) pro-life warrior in the span of about 5 minutes.

Back then, I often wondered just how many children God would give us the honor of helping to rescue.

As you know, Human Coalition focuses on one specific group of people: the abortion-determined. We intentionally reach out to women and men who’ve already made the decision to abort. That is our mission field. And they are the most challenging group of people to work with, for obvious reasons. The abortion-determined family doesn’t typically want to visit one of HC’s participating life-affirming pregnancy centers, or speak with one of the agents at Human Coalition’s Call Center, because we do not provide abortions or refer them for abortions.

However, abortion-determined people are in pain, confused, and in need of help… and that’s why we reach out to them.

Back in June 2010, I wondered if we might one day save 10 babies. Or perhaps 25 babies—even 100. And then I wondered, What if we could save an entire day’s worth of aborted babies?

If we honored each baby aborted since 1973 with a moment of silence we would be silent for over 100 yearsEach day, 3,500 preborn babies are killed by abortion in America. Think about that number. It’s the enrollment of a huge high school, or the number of students in over 100 kindergarten classes. It’s more people than the entire population of many small towns across the country. Abortion is the leading cause of death in America, and approximately every 25 seconds abortion kills one child.

Could you imagine rescuing an entire day’s worth of children from abortion? That’s 3,500 babies. Yes, 3,500 precious boys and girls with priceless value and unlimited potential. Now that would be something.

As Human Coalition started growing, we also began dreaming about reaching that number. We expanded our Internet work, built an in-house call center, began operating two of our own pregnancy centers, formed relationships with 30 other life-affirming pregnancy centers, and developed an outreach to churches. And all the while, we were testing ideas, innovations, technologies, and best practices to see if we could accelerate the number of babies being rescued.

And, as a movement, we continued to learn, grow, and become more effective at caring to babies, women and families. Each year since HC was founded, the pace of rescuing babies has accelerated. Discoveries have been made, tests have been successful, new technologies have been installed, we built the HC Prayer App, and we began to sense something stirring. Something hopeful, something optimistic.

We could save 3,500 children from abortion.

I’m elated, stunned, surprised, and overjoyed to tell you that today, Baby #3,500 was rescued from death in the womb. Yet again, God has proven Himself to be bigger, more powerful, more gracious, and more loving than I ever could have imagined.

Each Day in America 3,500 babies are aborted

I hope you celebrate this milestone with me because you are a pivotal reason for why Baby #3,500 is still alive today. Human Coalition is funded through private donations, driven by prayer, and encouraged by tens of thousands of people around the world. Together, we have helped rescued 3,500 children and their families from the most desperate, tragic, and difficult circumstances our society produces.

A Look Ahead

As I suspect you already know, I’m thrilled to reach this milestone. But do you know what else? We’re not finished. In fact, in many ways we are just beginning. Human Coalition’s mission is to make abortion unthinkable and unavailable in America in our lifetime, and there are far too many abortions still being performed today, far too many hurting women, far too many lies, and far too much persistent evil in our nation for us to slow down now.

Sometimes when I pray about Human Coalition, I sense God quietly asking me a simple question: Brian, how many children do you want to rescue?

My answer is always the same: All of them, Lord.

I’m deeply grateful to you for your prayers and support of this work. Human Coalition has grown from a volunteer-only, shoestring organization to one of the largest pro-life nonprofits in the country. We are on track to have 100 paid staff in six states by the end of 2015, and we continue to accelerate the pace of saving families from abortion. Plus, there are some really big opportunities for HC just around the corner that I’m excited to tell you about in the coming weeks.

So, just for a moment, let’s pause and thank God for allowing us to help rescue 3,500 children from abortion. And then let’s cooperatively rescue the next 3,500. And let’s do it faster than we ever thought possible.

I’m asking you to join me in answering God’s question: How many children do you want to rescue?

All of them, Lord. All of them!
