“Kayla” had been a single mom for four years, struggling to make ends meet. With one child at home to care for, she felt torn when she discovered she was pregnant. She’d begun actively seeking abortion information, when her boyfriend of three years questioned whether or not this was his child. Feeling hurt and broken, Kayla didn’t see any way she could raise two children on her own with no job.

When Kayla came to our women’s care clinic, she received a free ultrasound and was able to see her well-formed 12-week-old baby. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing on the ultrasound monitor. She had previously believed her baby wasn’t formed yet. But there on the screen was her baby – moving and wiggling its arms and legs! Kayla and the nurse discussed the development of her baby and how Kayla didn’t have to do this alone. Kayla told the nurse that although her boyfriend wasn’t happy about her pregnancy, he was against abortion. When she left the clinic, Kayla felt encouraged but still uncertain about what she was going to do.

Still set on abortion

During a follow-up appointment, Kayla shared with the nurse that she was still considering abortion. Kayla said she felt alone and didn’t know how she could bring a child into the world when she was already struggling financially. Kayla’s nurse encouraged her once again and shared with her about the resources available to her. But Kayla still felt torn about her decision.

Once more, Kayla came back to the clinic. She shared that she’d made an appointment at an abortion clinic, but she couldn’t go through with it. She asked for a second ultrasound and if she could pick up a car seat for her little girl, whom she welcomed some months later.
