The pro-life movement is driven by passionate people like you and me who want to stop abortion. Christians rightly know that God is the creator of life and that life begins at conception. However, we live in a world where people believe many different things. Abortion supporters believe that life in the womb is just a clump of cells and not a human. As a result, abortions are made to be a casual thing with “my body, my choice” ruling many decisions. 

So if you’re a Christian and desire to see this culture change from one that celebrates death to one that cherishes life, here are 5 practical steps you can take to stop abortion in America. 

1 PRAY THAT GOD WILL INTERVENE AND STOP ABORTION

The initial step to consider as a Christian is to consistently engage in prayer. As emphasized in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, we are encouraged to “pray without ceasing.” The Scriptures urge us to maintain a fervent attitude in our prayers. In times of hardship or crisis, it’s not uncommon to feel powerless but in such moments, prayer becomes the most vital action we can take. Prayer has the transformative power to touch hearts and influence minds.  

Here are five verses you can pray to end abortion:

Proverbs 24:11 – Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. Pray that God would continue to rescue the next child in the womb from abortion. 

Psalm 127: 3 – Truly children are a gift from the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward. Thank God for children and ask Him to help our culture to see children as a gift and a blessing. 

Psalm 34:17-18 – The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Pray that the righteous would cry out to God and that God would deliver our culture from the tragedy of abortion. 

Amos 5:24 – But let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. Pray that justice would roll down like waters for the oppressed, for children in the womb. 

Galatians 6:9 – Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Pray that God would encourage the entire pro-life movement to persevere and continue in the good work set before us to seek the end of abortion. 

2 STAY EDUCATED WITH UP-TO-DATE NEWS AND RESOURCES

Staying educated is hugely important to be able to defend the pro-life position! The great part is that there are a ton of great resources to look at to stay informed. 3 SUPPORT PRO-LIFE ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TO STOP ABORTION

Supporting a pro-life organization encompasses a spectrum of action steps, from dedicating your time and effort through volunteering at your local pregnancy center, to contributing financially and offering resources and material goods to local and national pro-life organizations. You can also mobilize and encourage others to volunteer simply by sharing with your friends and families the need for assistance.  

Pregnancy centers and other pro-life organizations organize fundraising events, 5K races, and even baby showers.  When you give to a pro-life organization, whether through your time, effort, or resources, you are truly being the hands and feet of Jesus to those in need of help and hope.  

The combined resources of the entire pro-life movement (approx. $700M) are estimated to comprise less than half the annual budget of Planned Parenthood (approx. $1.8B), a single pro-abortion enterprise. What could the pro-life movement do if financial support increased? We could stop abortions from happening across the nation.   

4 HELP MOMS SEE THAT ABORTION IS UNNECESSARY

Here’s the thing, we all know that abortion is unnecessary in our society. However, for the mom seeking an abortion, she believes it is necessary for her. She is overwhelmed by her circumstances and is surrounded by a culture that has convinced her that abortion is her only option. 

We know firsthand that women want to parent their child. For abortion to be the unnecessary choice for moms, we must show them that alternative solutions are available, and individuals must be willing to offer assistance. 

Moms facing unexpected pregnancies need YOU! Do you know someone who is pregnant or someone who recently had a baby? We made a list of some tangible ways that YOU can serve that mom in need. Not all of these are easy, but neither are the circumstances that these moms need to overcome.  

  • Transportation: Do you know a pregnant mom who may need a ride to a doctor’s appointment? Maybe she’s without a car and could use some money for a bus pass. Perhaps she’s in the market for a new vehicle and you or someone you know has the means to meet that need. 
  • Childcare: As a mom prepares to return to work after giving birth, a challenge she may encounter is lining up childcare for her baby. Maybe she can’t afford daycare or lacks the support of nearby family members. Offering to babysit and help with childcare gives her the peace of mind that she can successfully balance both her job and her role as a parent! 
  • Job Security: Are you a business owner? Ensure that you don’t have any biases or prejudices towards hiring someone because they’re pregnant. And offer benefits packages around maternity leave that show that you support her becoming a new mom. 
  • Adoption and Foster Care: If you are passionate about adoption or foster care, stepping out to parent a child shows our society the pro-life movement is ready to continue being there for babies long after they are born. Pro-life doesn’t just mean pro-baby, but also pro-women. Often, it’s obstacles like these where moms feel like they have no other choice but to abort their child. They don’t see an immediate solution. YOU can provide the solution or tangible good to a mom in need so that abortion becomes completely unnecessary.  

5 ENCOURAGE YOUR CHURCH TO BE ACTIVE/PROLIFE

The truth is, there are post-abortive women sitting in congregations that desire healing and even mentorship. However, the burden should not rest solely on the shoulders of the Pastor, but the members of the body should come together as a whole to acknowledge the issue at hand.  

We are created in the very image of God and that is the very foundation for the significance of human life. Abortion is not a political issue, but a moral one.  

Whether you’re a Pastor, church administrator, or a church member – perhaps you’re the person to initiate this conversation! Because the responsibility does not belong to one single person, it belongs to everyone in the Church.  

Every member of the body can contribute to the mobilization of your local church by raising awareness about abortion and actively participating in the development of a volunteer engagement plan. Together, we can work towards fostering a ‘culture of life’ within the church by providing support to those affected by abortion and establishing a safe environment for women facing unexpected pregnancies. Perhaps offering a mentorship program or a life group for post-abortive moms is a great place to start.
